Most Asked Question on Design

You may join a coaching institute or you can prepare all by yourself.

For Creative Ability Test (CAT), try making different sceneries. For example, a scene of community festival, a cobbler at workplace, traffic jam etc. Make yourself perfect in drawing human figures. Practice poster making. Don't practice with water colours because they aren't allowed there. Also get some knowledge about the colour schemes, like which colour depicts which emotion. You should buy a reference book, there are many books available in the market. Practice all of it's question papers. The CAT exam is of 3 hours in which 3–4 questions are asked, so practice the questions in the time limit. CAT has 50% weightage.

The General Ability Test (GAT) contains logical reasoning questions, english grammar, passage comprehension, maths (till class 10th), general knowledge questions. You need not to be stressed about GAT. It's quite easy. It's a 2 hour test and there's no negative marking. The reference books have covered all of these topics in a pretty good manner. And besides that keep yourself up to date with latest fashion trends, watch advertisement (you should know that which celebrity endorses which brand) and read newspaper. That would be all. GAT has 30% weightage.

Cracking NIFT isn't that difficult. NIFT is widely regarded as the easiest entrance exam in India.

  • Observe your surroundings, pay attention to the minutest details. This would help you a lot in your CAT.

  • Your selection largely depends upon your 'creative' and 'out of the box' ideas and thinking. I'll give you an example- I had to draw a motif using only triangles in my CAT, I made a whole Warli painting with trees, peacocks etc. You also should improve your sketching, I don't mean that you improve to the level of an artist but yes, your sketching should be neat and perspectives should be proper.

  • For GAT, no need to fret much, just recapitulate your elementary maths especially the following topics- ratios and proportion, mensuration, speed, distance and other basic concepts of physics. You should be well informed with the current affairs pertaining to the fashion industry specifically as they carry a major chunk of questions. You should know about celebrities, designers, brands and endorsements. Read newspapers regularly to brush up your english skills to excel in language conventions section.

  • And for the situation test, I'd recommend joining a crash course which I did too as those people are professionals and would help you a lot and you'll get exposed to a variety of materials and brilliant ideas from your fellow classmates.
